Regarding its origin

You've just picked up your child, you're perhaps on your way to the playground, when suddenly your child starts humming. Heartily and completely innocently, they're singing along to the songs they learned at daycare and/or school. Songs that you might have sung yourself as a child.

But now you have an educational responsibility and are astonished, perhaps also sad, angry, triggered by the discriminatory words that are pouring out of your child's lips.

You quickly realize that there's a greater power at play, and you can't simply banish these songs from your child's environment. So you start by just changing the lyrics a little...

We had a similar experience. Knowing that we couldn't achieve much on our own, we turned it into a project.

In the project "Who the heck is Columbus?", we reworked five children's songs from a critical perspective on colonialism and retold the stories. The participating children sang them with the support of parents, educators, artists, and interns, using beats they had created themselves, and even filmed three of the songs together.
