Reencontro Familiar: The search for lost fathers in Mozambique

Introduction:

The Reencontro Familiar initiative is dedicated to helping families in Mozambique find their estranged fathers. Many of these fathers worked as contract laborers in the former East Germany and were forced to leave the country without their children. Years or even decades later, the initiative strives to reunite these families and give the children the opportunity to meet their fathers. The following report highlights the work and achievements of this remarkable initiative.

Background:

During the Cold War, East Germany maintained close ties with many African countries, including Mozambique. As part of these relations, numerous Mozambican men were sent to East Germany as contract workers. Due to political upheavals and the end of the East German regime, many of these contract workers were forced to leave the country without their families. This painful separation led to decades of longing and unfulfilled dreams.

The work of the initiative:

Reencontro Familiar, a non-profit organization, was founded in 2006 by Peter Steutner. Today, the organization is run by the adult children of former contract workers Fatima Woznica and Manuel Siegert.

The goal of Reencontro Familiar is to find the estranged fathers and initiate the necessary steps for family reunification. Through intensive research, collaboration with local authorities, and the use of social media, the initiative has already achieved an impressive track record. Sandra Ross, Sabrina Salz, Laura Mustapha, Matthias Gotthardt (all children of former contract workers), and former contract worker Tito Travoni form the core team of Reencontro Familiar.

Successes and impact:

To date, Reencontro Familiar has reunited more than 150 families. The stories of these joyous reunions are full of emotion and deeply touch the heart. Children who had never met their fathers before were finally able to run into their arms and make up for lost time. The impact of these reunions is enormous, both for the individual families and for the communities involved. The initiative helps to build bridges between two cultures and raises awareness of the importance of family unity.

Challenges and future plans:

The search for missing fathers is often a painstaking process that demands considerable time, patience, and financial resources. The initiative faces challenges such as limited funding, difficulties in conducting research, and overcoming bureaucratic hurdles. Nevertheless, Reencontro Familiar is determined to continue reuniting families and carrying on its vital work. Future plans include expanding the search to other regions and strengthening collaboration with authorities and organizations.,
