What is the Federal Volunteer Service?
The Federal Volunteer Service is a project focused on civic engagement: It aims to create a new culture of volunteering in Germany and to enable as many people as possible to engage in community service.
The suspension of compulsory military service, and consequently also of civilian service, on July 1, 2011, presented a major societal challenge. The Federal Volunteer Service was intended to help at least partially compensate for the consequences of the suspension of civilian service. Therefore, all service positions and placements recognized under the Civilian Service Act were automatically recognized as placement positions and placements for the Federal Volunteer Service.
The Federal Volunteer Service usually lasts twelve months, but at least six and at most 18 months. In exceptional cases, it can be performed for up to 24 months.
The Federal Volunteer Service is generally a full-time commitment. However, for volunteers over 27, part-time service of more than 20 hours per week is also possible. A monthly allowance is paid, and volunteers are covered by social security during their service. Further information on the specific legal framework can be found in the relevant section.
